HISTORIC BATHURST & SURROUNDS
(EASTERN CAPE)
Established in May 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin who was acting Governor of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope at the time, Bathurst was named in honor of Earl Henry Bathurst who was Secretary of State for the Colonies. Aside from the listed historic buildings which appear here, there are quite a number built during the 1820’s and 1830’s which have been modified over the years and now serve as private dwellings.
In addition to the historic buildings, there are quite a few other buildings of general interest which form an integral part of this timeless village, and which I have included here to help add to the “Spirit of Place” that is the soul of Bathurst.
Thank you to David Forsdyke for his information input via his brochure.
